The day is getting closer when we’ll be diving into John 17 in detail. I’m looking forward to seeing my Scottish brethren in Pitlochry.
Here’s a question. In John 17 Jesus addresses his Father in three different ways. He calls Him, “Father”, vv1, 5, 21, 24; “Holy Father”, v11; and “Righteous Father”, v25.
Do you see any significance in these various forms of address? I made me think about how I talk to God in my own prayers. Am I too focused on using one word: “God”, “Father” and so on. Perhaps it would be good to look at the different ways people addressed God in prayer in the Bible and use some of their words.
OK, I’m off now to pray to my “Father”, “Holy Father”, and “Righteous Father”. Let me know your thoughts and what helps you.

A question for us all…. Jesus uses these words when talking to or about his Father in John 17: “Father”, vv1, 5, 21, 24; “Holy Father”, v11; “Righteous Father”, v25. What do you think is the significance of these different ways of addressing his Father? Can you see something important for us here in our relationship with God?
Let me know what you think in the comment box below.
Many thanks, Malcolm

I’m delighted to be speaking on the seventeenth chapter of John’s Gospel at this year’s Scottish Highlands New Year’s retreat.
The event is only a few weeks away, and it seems to me that some advanced discussion about John 17 might be helpful. As we approach the retreat, let’s take some time to read the chapter, pray about it (it is a prayer, anyway!) and start talking about what it meant, and what it means.
This page is the place for comments, questions and ideas.
Let me know what you are seeing in this amazing chapter, and let’s start learning together even before we meet together in Pitlochry.
God bless,
Malcolm
