In this course we will cover some of the basics of the preparation and presentation of biblical lessons.

  1. How to choose what to speak on.
  2. How to explore the passage for yourself.
  3. How to use other resources like commentaries.
  4. How to select your point.
  5. How to choose a structure for your lesson.
  6. How to start your lesson.
  7. How to end your lesson.
  8. How to make your lesson memorable.
  9. How to make the most of congregational involvement.
  10. How to prepare yourself to speak.

Extra class: A summary of the course and suggestions for ongoing learning.

Introduction
Most people think preaching and teaching is about competency, knowledge and an exemplary Christian walk.
It’s about hunger, connection with God and compassion for people.

““Is not my word like fire,” declares the LORD, “and like a hammer that breaks a rock in pieces?” (Jeremiah 23:29 NIV11)
“As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.” (Isaiah 55:10–11 NIV11)
“For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” (Hebrews 4:12 NIV11)

He does not need the eloquent, but the willing.
He does not need the talented, but the humble.

Two things took me to where I am today (in addition to God’s patience!).

  1. Deep conviction that the most powerful thing we have is God’s word.
  2. People willing to give me a chance and train me.

Proceed on the assumption you are called to try to speak until someone tells you otherwise.

Question: Do you believe you can be effective in teaching and preaching God’s word?
Question: What would convince you either way?

Conclusion:
Truth through personality
God has no other method of bringing his truth to people (believers and nonbelievers) then through other people.
You have a great privilege. Make the most of it.
